Frankly, I deeply fear the politician who is out to “do some good.” The problem is that when someone thinks that what they are doing is good, they’re much less amenable to compromises and to working with others whose motives differ from their own. I’d far rather put my vote behind a politician who simply enjoys wielding political power and achieving successes for their own sake; that’s a person who’s much more likely to do the job of governing an unruly and independent people in a manner that everyone can live with.
